The Eskimo Republic Glasgow

The performers listed on this page took part in "The Eskimo Republic Glasgow" as presented at the Edinburgh Festival in the mid 90's, and were not original members of the Glesca Eskimos. In the past there has been much misinformation floating around as to who was and was not an "Eskimo". Jim McLean, one of the two surviving Glesca Eskimos (Nigel Denver being the other) has cleared this up for us.

For the record, The Eskimos were Morris Blythman (aka-Thurso Berwick), Josh MacRae, Nigel Denver, Jackie O'Connor and Jim McLean.

Performers from the "The Eskimo Republic Glasgow":
Ronnie Alexander, Finlay Allison, Bob Blair, Bobby Campbell, Ian Davison, Robin Hall, Arthur Johnstone, Enoch Kent, Ian Kirkpatrick, Danny Kyle, Jimmie Macgregor, Gordon McCulloch, Geordie McIntyre, Adam McNaughtan, Ewan McVicar, Brian Miller, Palaver: Aileen Carr, Gordeanna McCulloch, Chris Miles & Maureen Jelks, Sam Ramsay, Jimmy Ross and Charlie Soane

The Exiles

A London-based trio of Scots (hence their name):, the Exiles consisted of vocalist Enoch Kent, who already had a formidable reputation as a singer and had formed the pioneering modern Scottish folk group The Reivers in the 1950's; Bobby Campbell, and Gordon McCulloch. Formed in the mid-1960's, they recorded for the Topic Records label.

Danny Kyle

image Danny was one of the best known and best loved persons on the Scottish folk music scene. He was involved in virtually every good folk festival in Scotland; people chose their festivals just by his name. His popular Open Stages are legendary. He had a great sense of humour, he knew how to get on with people, he always wore the ugliest ties and a bonnie bonnet. On Sunday, 5th July 1998, Danny Kyle has passed away. He leaves a gap in the Folk Music World that will hardly ever be filled. Hopefully a bit of his spirit will live on in the international folk music scene.

Adam McNaughtan

image I, Adam McNaughtan, being of sound mind, write my own sleeve-notes. I lived the first twenty-five years of my life in the East End of Glasgow and I have a few years to go before I have served that long in the Soo'side. I sing my own and other people's songs without instrumental accompaniment. My detractors claim that I only break the monotony by pitching every third song too high. Most of my songs are humorous. That is, they make me laugh. It was the late Bob Small, Latin teacher at Whitehill School, who taught me that the cloth cap and the learned sock could be worn together without incongruity. I hope that my search for laughs in the combination is no betrayal of his teaching.

Ewan McVicar

image An important contributor to the folk revival, his songs are widely sung and recorded by Scottish traditional singers, and one song entered the Hit Parade in 1960, but his chief claim to fame is that he has written twenty songs for the Singing Kettle children's show. He has written or co-authored several books on aspects of Scotland's traditional song, and founded the first Scottish folk club in Glasgow.
